Sarnia's Maria Mikola poses at Ironworks Gym in Point Edward with the four-foot tall trophy she won for being named the top female competitor at the Ontario Natural Bodybuilding Championships held earlier this month in Toronto. Mikola, who operates her own personal training business, also holds the trophy (in her right hand) she captured for winning her division -- the heavy weight division -- at the competition. With the win, Mikola is eligible to compete in the World Qualifier (Canadian Natural Championships) in Hamilton next July.

Maria Mikola expected to compete as a middleweight at the Ontario Natural Bodybuilding Championships in Toronto earlier this month. But when she weighed-in four pounds over the 125 lb. middleweight limit, it bumped her into the heavy-weight division with many much larger competitors.
However, in the end, it made no difference to the 34-year-old Sarnia resident who not only won her division, she was named the top bodybuilder in the entire competition.
It was the seventh title in 11 career competitions for Mikola, who started attending meets five years ago when she lived in Michigan.
With the win, Mikola qualified for the Canadian Natural Championships -- which also serves as a qualifier for the Worlds -- next July in Hamilton. (The events which are billed as "natural" are drug-tested events).
She had already qualified for the Canadian Bodybuilding Championships, where she will compete next month in Toronto.
